Retail Design: Niketown
Chicago, Illinois
Chipman Design Architecture was the architect for the renovation of the five-story 60,000-square foot Niketown store on Chicago’s famed Michigan Avenue.
Working closely with Nike designers, Chipman Design created a new store layout and interior environment making the store more inviting and easier to shop. Revolving doors were relocated, fabric awnings were added and a butt-joint glass storefront was installed to maximize views into the store and return the facade to a character more in step with its Michigan Avenue neighbors. Store layout also required an additional retail sales area that was created by infilling the former two-story basketball court and bridging across two areas of the three-story atrium. Retail design also included new lighting systems heightened store brightness and enhanced merchandise display.
Despite the project’s accelerated schedule, complexity of its scope and the extent of structural modifications, Niketown remained open throughout construction.
